Police are warning parents in Leicestershire not to break the law by giving their children a 'Goped'. They say parents are unaware that the motorised scooters are subject to the same laws as motorbikes.
Although a popular present for teenagers, they cannot be ridden on the roads or by anyone who does not have a driving licence.
Officers are warning teenagers who are caught riding them on the roads without a licence will be taken to court.
Pc Calvin Bailey, from Eyres Monsell police station, said: "If anybody is actually purchasing one of these Goped's or scooters then they need to be aware that they can only be used on private land.
"They would also need to produce insurance, an MOT for the actual scooter and they would also have to have a driving licence."
