Sickness outbreak prompts summit
Airline passengers
12 people were taken ill on the flight home from Tenerife
Health and airport chiefs are in an emergency meeting after passengers were held on a plane in a sickness outbreak.

It took two hours for health chiefs to give the all-clear allowing passengers at Nottingham East Midlands Airport off the flight from Tenerife.

Dr Philip Monk, medical officer for North West Leics Council, said he was called by ambulance crews and not the airport as he would have expected.

The airport said it is carrying out an investigation into what happened.

Dr Monk said an advance call from airport authorities would have given time to give advice to the pilot, ahead of landing, to make preparations and to avoid delays.

He said: "Some things went right and some things did not go quite as expected and we need to sort out how we make that better so this does not happen again."

About 12 passengers, who had been on a cruise together, were sick on the plane, prompting health fears on the My Travel service which landed at 1900 GMT on Tuesday.

None of the passengers was allowed off until a health team visited the aircraft.

North West Leicestershire District Council, which covers the airport, is responsible for incoming passengers, food and health services, at the airport near Castle Donnington.

Council and health chiefs called a meeting for Wednesday lunchtime.
