Drinkers warned to behave in city
A major operation is taking place in Leicester over the Christmas period to reduce violent crime on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Behave or be Banned campaign is designed to warn people that if they cause trouble they can be barred from the city centre for 24 hours.

Officers say revellers must understand what is acceptable behaviour.

A similar crackdown in the summer saw more than 450 people given fines or banning orders.

Unacceptable behaviour

Police have been given new powers by the government to define zones where troublemakers can be moved on and even arrested.

Insp Ian Coulton, the officer in charge of the operation, said: "The initial level of response is to tell someone who is misbehaving that they can be banned for 24 hours.

"Ultimately they can be then banned and we can scale that up, giving fixed penalty notices for disorder.

"We can then arrest them and take them to the police station."

Officers say they understand high spirits are part of the party season but there is a definite line between that and unacceptable behaviour.
