Currying favour with parenthood
Peter Banks
Peter Banks says the herbs used vary from day to day
A restaurant manager in Leicester reckons fresh ingredients on his menu have caused a spate of recent pregnancies amongst his employees.

In the last two years five waitresses and a kitchen worker at Lanna Thai Restaurant have conceived.

All the women went on to give birth to daughters.

Peter Banks said: "We give a free plate of herbs with each meal. We think this has had a bearing on the fact we've had six babies in the last two years."

The latest baby was born last week, but the first of the women to conceive was Mr Banks' partner, Tassanee Tasua, who owns the restaurant.

He said: "We took it over in September 2001, and by October she was pregnant."

However, there does not appear to be any one particular herb contributing to the women's evident fertility.

"The fresh herbs we use vary from day to day. We import them from Thailand on a weekly basis so it's a mixed bag," said Mr Banks.

And he admits that employees leaving to have babies does create problems.

"It's causing us nightmares - we're so short of staff at the moment."
