MP Jim Marshall often defied his party |
The funeral of Leicester South MP Jim Marshall is taking place on Tuesday. Mr Marshall's sudden death in May shocked those who knew him, bringing tributes from political colleagues, including the Prime Minister.
Mr Marshall, 63, had represented Leicester South for nearly 30 years, including time as a Junior Whip in the Callaghan government.
The service, at St James the Greater Church in the city, is being followed by a private family service.
Many mourners
He had also been a Labour spokesman on Home Affairs and Northern Ireland.
More recently he was a well known left wing member of the Labour Party, voting against the government over the war in Iraq.
Tony Blair described Mr Marshall as "a very popular figure in Parliament".
Many mourners are attending the funeral, which started at 1300 BST and is being led by Canon Glynn Richerby.
