Leicester trio Keith Gillespie, Frank Sinclair and Paul Dickov |
Leicester City Football Club are insisting that the three Premiership footballers accused of sexual assault should have their charges dropped. The club said forensic tests showed no link between Paul Dickov, Frank Sinclair and Keith Gillespie and the women they allegedly assaulted.
The footballers were charged after three women accused them of serious sexual assault at a hotel in La Manga.
The trio spent a week in jail in Spain before being freed on bail.
Leicester City chief executive Tim Davies said: "There is nothing that links our players with the girls."
The players' defence lawyer, Luis Ruiperez, said he would now be seeking a judicial review to clear the players officially and have their bail money returned.
Full trial
But there could still be opposition from Encarnacion Gomez, the lawyer representing their accusers, who could still insist a full trial takes place.
The judge originally granted the men bail in March after a private hearing lasting several hours, in which both the players and their accusers gave evidence.
The Leicester trio were released after a 288,000 euro (196,500) bail payment was made.
A further hearing to review the new developments is expected to be held over the next few weeks at a court in Cartagena, in Spain.
Mr Davies added: "He needs to sit down and consider everything and decide how he is going to proceed."
