MRSA kills 5,000 people each year |
Hospitals in Leicester are taking new steps to combat infection by MRSA, the so-called hospital "superbug". MRSA is thought to be caused by germs which find it easy to develop in a hospital environment.
The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has decided to invite people into its hospital to learn the facts about the disease.
At the same time people will be shown how the hospitals are trying to keep germs under control.
Patient criticism
One of the main innovations is disinfectant gel being kept next to patients' beds.
Staff will also be demonstrating basic hygiene measures.
Patient groups are already saying they are not enough to effectively control the problem.
But hospital spokesperson Anne McGregor said: "It is very difficult to fully eradicate MRSA.
"People in hospitals often have low immune systems, but we are learning more about how to prevent the bug from being transmitted."
A recent report from the National Audit Office suggested that 5,000 people die each year from MRSA and other similar infections in the UK.
