Teachers tackle truancy problem
A college in Leicester is considering fining students who fail to turn up for their classes.

Riverside College was placed in special measures in February after a critical Ofsted report which highlighted problems with truancy.

Through the scheme parents will be called in to attend meetings which focus on the lack of attendance.

After the initial implementation of the scheme, college bosses say they hope to extend it to feeder primary schools.

Teachers will also be examining the issue during lessons, with maths exercises looking at attendance statistics, while art students will design posters encouraging pupils not to miss school.

Special assemblies will be held and so-called "hot spot" days will examine the problem of poor attendance.
