Firefighter plan concerns union
Fire engines
Hinckley could lose two engines
Plans to use firefighters as stand-in paramedics have concerned a union in Leicestershire.

A report by the county's chief fire officer proposes "co-responding" as part of the service's modernisation.

It is among the possible changes to take place following last year's firefighters' strike, during which the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) agreed to review its practices.

However the FBU say some proposals could have a negative effect.

In particular, it is concerned by the "co-responding" plan, under which firefighters in rural areas could be called when an ambulance is needed.

The union is also upset about changes planned in Hinckley, where the number of fire engines could be reduced from four to two.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said it was in the early stages of discussing the plans, but insisted emergencies would always be attended by people who were properly trained.
