One in ten motorists who were stopped as part of a summer crackdown on drink-driving in Leicestershire were found to be over the limit. Officers have described the figure as 'extremely disappointing'.
During 'Operation Lion' 458 drivers were tested and, as a result, 48 were arrested for giving a positive reading.
The figures are double those caught in the force's Christmas drink-drive campaign when around 5% of those stopped were over the limit.
Officers are blaming the increase on people drinking at summer barbecues and parties, where the measures are often much larger than in pubs.
