'Skip school' for healthy pupils
Skipping children
Children are learning the game to improve their fitness
Health experts are training teachers in the playground pastime of skipping to pass their skills on to youngsters.

Children are even staying after classes at a school in Oakham, Rutland, for lessons in skipping.

The scheme at the English Martyrs Primary School is backed by the British Heart Foundation as an ideal way for children to keep fit.

The move follows concerns children are spending too much time watching television instead of exercising.

The game is favoured by teachers because they say it complements the rest of the curriculum.

Science lessons

It comes as the British Heart Foundation recommends all children and young people between the ages of five and 18 should enjoy at least an one hour of moderate exercise every day.

The charity is holding workshops for teachers and providing free skipping ropes for pupils.

Alison Chambers, school sports co-ordinator said: "PE is linked to all of the curriculum and obviously using it in playtime is linked to citizenship and personal social and health education.

"It also links in with science because we are looking at the heart and lungs and general fitness and body awareness.

"It is something that will filter through to all areas of the curriculum which is a bonus."

Organisers hope the lessons in skipping will cut the risk of the youngsters suffering heart disease in later life.

Chris Brooker from the British Heart Foundation said: "The benefits of skipping are not just the cardio-vascular benefits, but in terms of strength, co-ordination rhythm, timing.

It also supports teamwork and social skills when we're working with long ropes and in groups as well so there really is a lot to get out of it."
