It is illegal to use a mobile phone while driving
A total of 34 people in Leicestershire have been fined for using a mobile phone while driving, since the practice was banned in December.

Leicestershire Police say they are disappointed at the number of people ignoring the road safety message.

A Transport Research Laboratory study showed that talking on a mobile phone while driving was more dangerous than being drunk at the wheel.

Inspector Andy Chapman said motorists need to be reminded of the dangers.

He said: "It is a danger and it really rolls alongside of seatbelts and drink driving.

"It needs to remain in people's minds and, from time to time, we'll resurrect it as the year goes on.

"But it really is imperative that its people's own responsibility not to use their phone whilst driving."
