Up to six special needs schools in Leicester could be merged with mainstream schools. It is one of the options being considered by Leicester's Local Education Authority (LEA).
However, the plan is being opposed by some schools which could be affected by the idea.
Teachers at Nether Hall school say they feel it could have a negative effect on children.
The school caters for 75 youngsters with a range of different abilities and needs. Chair of governors Stan Brown confirmed any cuts would be a blow.
He said: "If this school closes it will be a loss to the community.
"The way the LEA is proposing these changes is very, very abrupt."
Leicester City Council says it is trying to give the best possible future to children with special needs within the city.
It says the current situation is unsustainable and wants to ensure that pupils who need education in a special school are given it.
