Patient detained indefinitely
A man was stabbed to death in a violent attack just eight days after his killer discharged himself from a psychiatric unit, Leicester Crown Court has heard.

The stabbing happened despite doctors warning that Dale Pick, 36, from Newfoundpool, Leicester, represented a "real risk of violence to others".

Pick admitted the manslaughter of Michael Doherty from Leicester on the grounds of diminished responsibility, and was detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

The court heard Mr Doherty was stabbed seven times in the head then in the heart, after he tried to break up an argument between Pick and one of his friends.

Independent inquiry

After the death the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust immediately set up a full internal investigation into the appropriateness of the care and treatment Pick received.

The report was passed to the local strategic health authority, which confirmed last week an independent inquiry would be carried out.

Maureen Young, director of nursing, said: "On behalf of the Trust, I want to offer my sincere sympathy to both the families involved in this case.

"Also I want to reassure them, and the public, that we take their concerns very seriously indeed and I'm in no way complacent about the events leading up to the death of Mr Doherty."
