Half of the people growing vegetables are women
The number of people in Leicester renting allotments has increased by 14% in the last year.

More than 200 people have started keeping an allotment and almost half of them are women, according to Leicester City Council.

More than 1,500 people in Leicester rent an allotment.

This is the second year of a five year improvement programme for the city's 45 allotment sites.

Around 100,000 has been spent improving them in the past 12 months.

The money has been used to build new fences, sheds and in some cases, to lower rents.

The improvements have attracted more than 200 new tenants since January.

The city council says it hopes to invest a similar sum next year.
