Work on danger crossing
A level crossing in Rutland, which has been the scene of a number of near accidents, is to undergo vital safety improvements.

A new signal is being installed near the busy railway crossing in Oakham.

Over the last few years, three trains have sped past red stop signals near the crossing, as they travelled through Oakham station.

On one occasion, an engine crossed the main road in the centre of Oakham while the barriers were open, narrowly missing a baby's pram.

The old signal was at the end of a bend and safety inspectors became concerned that it was not visible for long enough.

They issued an "improvement notice", which forced railway officials to act.

The new signal is being put up away from the bend and a video has been produced to alert train drivers to the dangers in the area.

The work is expected to last for the whole weekend of 30 and 31 August.
