A new theatre was at the centre of the plans |
There are fears Leicester's multi-million pound cultural quarter could become a victim of drastic cuts being proposed to the city's leisure services. Leicester City council says it has to make over 41m of savings and has sent out a public questionnaire asking where the cuts should be made.
As part of the survey, people are being asked whether the council should withdraw its 4m pound contribution to the planned cultural quarter in St George's.
A major theatre, a film and media centre and a live music venue had all been planned for the area.
Pressing issues
Supporters of the scheme say the loss of the project would have a dramatic effect on the city's future.
John Nicholls, from the Leicester Regeneration Company, said: "It's part of the offer that Leicester can make to attract the jobs, the facilities the city is going to need long term.
"Our manufacturing base is declining so we need other jobs to off set that.
" So while there are some tough choices to be made over well-loved, well used facilities like swimming pools, libraries, let's not sacrifice the future over pressing issues of the present."
