Setback for plans for airport station
East Midlands Airport
The public inquiry is a real setback for transport campaigners

Plans for a railway station serving East Midlands Airport have suffered a setback.

An application by Midland Mainline to build a station near the A453 has been approved by the local council, but the Transport Department has since called for a public inquiry.

Midland Mainline's application to build the Parkway station was approved more than two years ago.

The company has been waiting for government approval ever since, but that was thought to be a formality.

A Compulsory Purchase Order was even issued the land close to Junction 24 of the M1.

But people living in the area, who are thought to be the owners of the land in question, have appealed against that order, forcing a public inquiry.

It is a real setback for public transport campaigners, who had been hoping for an integrated transport system linking the airport with the main railway line across the East Midlands.
