Midwives from overseas are to be trained at a university in a bid to tackle a shortage in Leicester. There are around 300 midwife posts in Leicester's hospitals and 24 of them are currently empty.
It is hoped the new course at De Montfort University will help boost their numbers.
The 'Adaptation to Midwifery Course' is aimed at midwives from abroad, who trained outside the European Union, but are now resident in the UK and want to work.
Students will cover topics including cultural awareness, language support and UK law and regulations.
The course is run in conjunction with the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and students who enrol will be employed by the Trust and receive a salary of almost �12,000.
