Hospital trust defends performance

Waiting times in some casualty departments were criticised
The three hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust have been rated among the worst of their kind in the country.

A new survey by the Commission for Health Improvement have given the University Hospitals a no stars rating for failing to meet targets on A and E treatment times and waiting list lengths.

The trust is now among the bottom 12 in the country.

Hospitals in Nottingham and Derby were among those to be awarded a full three stars and qualify for foundation status.

Not complacent

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, which deals with mental health and learning disability services, has been awarded two stars out of three.

Lincolnshire's hospitals have slipped down the health service ratings.

The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust has been downgraded to one star from the two star status it received last year.

The Trust's interim chief executive, John Willetts, admitted he was disappointed.

He said: "Staff throughout the trust, in every area and department, at every level of the organisation are not complacent about this.

Lower rating

"We want to do better and our aim for next year will be to improve that rating."

Responding to the results, the chief executive of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Peter Reading, insisted the rating did not give a fair indication of their work.

He said: "It is very disappointing and it's a very poor reflection on the tremendous effort made by our staff to improve services.

"The star system is quite a harsh system, it's quite black and white and we failed on two of the government's key targets."

Ambulance service

The trust which runs Derby's hospitals has retained its top three-star status in the rankings.

There were also top ratings for the Greater Derby Primary Care Trust along with those covering Erewash, the Derbyshire Dales and the Amber Valley.

Nottinghamshire's largest NHS Trust has failed to keep up its previous high standards.

The Queens Medical Centre has gone from a 3 star to a 2 star rating this year.

But the City Hospital has improved from a 2 to a 3 star rating.

Kingsmill hospital has missed out on the top rating for hospital standards because of its failing when dealing with suspected cancer patients.

The East Midlands Ambulance Service was given two stars.
