Women wait on cancer compensation

The University of Leicester NHS Trust has insisted it is not acting deliberately slowly over a cancer compensation payout.

A group of women has been waiting more than two years for their money.

The women were diagnosed with cervical cancer after they had been told their smear tests were clear.

The misdiagnoses were revealed in an audit of 403 women with cervical cancer who were screened by Leicestershire Health Authority over a period of seven years from 1993.

Initially, 78 women were expecting to receive compensation but many of them are still waiting.

Their claims are being dealt with by solicitors from the NHS Litigation Authority and a spokesperson for the University of Leicester NHS Trust said they have already put a number of offers on the table.

The spokesperson says a protocol for dealing with the claims has been agreed between lawyers on both sides and insists a wait like this is not unusual.
