Major oil spill "deliberate"
Environment Agency clean-up operation
The Environmental Agency believes the oil was dumped on purpose
Environment experts investigating a major oil spill in Leicester say they are almost certain is was done deliberately.

More than 400 gallons of oil were dumped in the Grand Union Canal.

Now the Environment Agency is renewing its appeal for the public's help in tracking down those responsible.

The clean-up of the huge oil spill is still continuing nearly a week after it was discovered.

Witness appeal

The waste oil is believed to have entered the waterway through the drainage system near the Walkers stadium.

It has wreaked havoc with wildlife and the Environment Agency say it is treating the slick as a category one incident.

It says there is no proof it came from any nearby premises which points to it almost certainly being brought in from outside the area and dumped deliberately.

Investigators are hoping someone may have seen something suspicious and will report it to the police.

They are also warning their investigation could take weeks, as could the clean-up operation.
