Police 'tweets' help fight crime

The force is now actively seeking followers to its Twitter feed

Police in Lancashire have turned to "tweeting" as the latest tool for fighting crime in the county.

The force has set up its own page on the social networking website Twitter to distribute crime messages.

It is hoped the site will help officers reach a broader range of people, in particular younger generations.

Acting Deputy Chief Constable Wendy Walker said the force, which already uses Facebook and YouTube, wanted to embrace the technology.

Community interaction

Officers will tweet on information about events, problems and crimes affecting towns and villages across the county.

"More and more people are using social networking sites as an easy, instant form of communication they can trust and we want to embrace that," said Ms Walker.

"Social networking sites like Twitter present us with a fun way of reaching out to more people and proactively interacting with our communities."

The force is appealing for followers to receive the updates and help them fight crime.

Its Twitter account is registered as "LancsPolice".
