Council elections 2009: Lancashire

Lancashire sign

Lancashire has 12 main towns ranging in size from 14,000 to 132,000 people.

It has a mixed economic base including tourism and agriculture in more rural areas of the county.

In eastern parts of Lancashire the declining textile industries have left a legacy of low-skilled work, unemployment and low value housing, according to the Local Government Association.

Every seat at the Labour-run county council will be decided on 4 June.

Lancashire's best known seaside resort Blackpool is governed by a unitary authority after breaking away from Lancashire County Council 11 years ago.

It continues to attract millions of visitors every year, including many who go to watch the town's autumn illuminations.
