Keyhole surgery is performed live
Keyhole surgery
The theatre is the first of its kind in the North West
Surgeons will operate before a live audience at the launch of a new hi-tech keyhole surgery theatre in Lancashire.

The theatre, at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, can beam live coverage of operations to medical students and surgeons all over the world.

The technology will be used to link up with other training centres and teach future laparoscopic (keyhole) surgeons.

The gallstones operation will be led by leading keyhole surgeon Professor Michael Bailey.

Prof Bailey performed one of the first laparoscopic gallbladder removal operations in the UK in 1990.

The theatre, part of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is the first of its kind in the North West.

The procedure will be beamed to an audience of around 80 members of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals who will be seated in the Education Centre at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital.
