Mirror ball display up for award
Blackpool mirror ball
The ball was designed by artist Michael Trainor
A spectacular light show which lit-up Blackpool's mirror ball during the Festival of Light has been nominated for a national award.

The festival, held for the first time in 2005, was created to involve the community in the resort's 127-year-old illuminations show.

Blackpool Council believes its mirror ball, called "They shoot horses, don't they?", is the largest in the world.

The display is among three nominated for the 2006 Lighting Design Awards.

Councillor Eddie Collett, tourism spokesman, said it was "excellent news" that the ball was being recognised on a national level.

The revolving artwork, featuring 46,500 mirrors, is a permanent fixture on the resort's South Promenade.

The ball was designed by artist Michael Trainor and made in Oldham, Greater Manchester, by an engineering firm.
