George Birkett was named Age Concern's Grandparent of the Year |
A 75-year-old man who works tirelessly for his grandchildren - including one in a wheelchair - has been named Grandparent of the Year. George Birkett, 75, was nominated by his grandchildren Samantha and Thomas, both 13, who have health difficulties related to cerebral palsy.
Mr Birkett, from Carnforth, Lancashire, received his award from Cherie Blair.
Every night he puts wheelchair-bound Thomas to bed as his mother finds it hard to lift him.
The award was sponsored by Age Concern.
Champion grandparent Mr Birkett has supported his daughter Susan ever since his two grandchildren were born.
Grandfather and grandson share a love of snooker and Manchester City football club.
Mr Birkett, who has twice been mayor of Carnforth and is chairman of the charity A Breath For Life, was presented with his award by Mrs Blair at the House of Commons.
'Best granddad
He said: "I'm over the moon and so was Thomas. When I was announced he burst into tears.
"The way I see it Thomas has done far more for me than I have ever done for him.
"I help him but what he gives me I can't put into words."
Mr Birkett's granddaughter Samantha, with whom he shares a love of Harry Potter, said: "He supports us 100% and is always there for us. He is the best granddad in the whole wide world."
