Salt mine gas storage plan axed
A plan to store millions of tons of natural gas in underground salt caverns in Lancashire has been opposed by councillors for a second time.

Texan firm Canatxx was planning to store up to two million tons of natural gas at a site near Preesall.

Wyre Borough Council formally opposed the plans at a meeting on Wednesday, saying the plan poses an "unacceptable danger" to people living nearby.

A public inquiry into a similar plan from Canatxx is already under way.

Objection letter

The meeting of the authority's planning committee heard the company's second scheme was similar to the first.

A report by planning officers recommended that the storage of gas underground would pose an unacceptable danger to people living nearby, as well as harming the environment.

Councillors on the planning committee opposed the plan unanimously.

A formal letter of objection will now go to Lancashire County Council.
