Half of the 16 cases reported are linked to Lancaster University
Thousands of university students are to be immunised against mumps after new cases were reported in Lancashire.

Out of the 16 cases of the infection recently reported in Lancaster, half are linked to the city's university.

Older teenagers and students who missed out when the MMR vaccine was introduced in 1988 appear to be most vulnerable.

In the past year, 1,208 people in the North West have reportedly suffered from the infection, compared with 262 in 2003.

The first immunisation clinics will be held on Tuesday and more drop-in clinics are organised for next week.
