Their solicitor claims officers "jumped to conclusions" when they arrested the couple on suspicion of kidnapping their daughter.

Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed, released from police bail on Thursday, described the last nine months as "hell".

Shafilea Ahmed, 17, disappeared from home in September 2003. Her body was found in the Lake District in February.

Involvement denied

Mr Ahmed, 44, and his 41-year-old wife say the suspicion has meant they have felt distanced from the investigation into the murder of their daughter.

"We want to know what happened to our girl, that's the main thing," said Mr Ahmed.

The couple's solicitor Milton Firman said they were questioned very vigorously at a very early stage.

After what police describe as a thorough investigation they have been released from police bail and have always denied any involvement in Shafilea's disappearance.

'Felt trapped'

The teenager's body was discovered beside the River Kent in Cumbria in February.

There has been speculation she was the victim of an honour killing.

She had written poems about feeling trapped and had earlier drunk bleach after being introduced to a suitor for an arranged marriage.

Mr and Mrs Ahmed are expected to make an announcement with respect to any legal action against Cheshire Police on Monday.
