MP presses for cockle law change
Geraldine Smith, MP
Ms Smith wants to ensure the tragedy does not happen again
The future for cockle pickers working in Morecambe Bay is to be discussed at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) headquarters.

Fisheries minister Ben Bradshaw will meet MP for Morecambe and Lunesdale, Geraldine Smith, in London on Thursday.

They will be joined by Dr Jim Andrews from the North West Sea Fisheries.

Geraldine Smith says she will be pressing Mr Bradshaw to take steps to prevent a repeat of the drowning tragedy late on 5 February.

Caught in rising tides

A total of 23 people are believed to have died in the tragedy, as they were caught by rising tides at Hest Bank.

Charges against two people arrested over the deaths of the cockle pickers were dropped on 13 April.

Another six arrested in connection with the tragedy are currently on extended bail.

Four of the six are no longer suspected of manslaughter and are being questioned over immigration offences.
