Ceremony marks 'cockler' mourning
Morecambe Bay
Police believe 23 people were killed in Morecambe Bay's rising tides
A ceremony to mark 100 days of mourning for the cockle pickers who died at Morecambe Bay was held on Thursday.

Police now believe that 23 Chinese cocklers died in rising tides at Hest Bank in February, after the 21st body was recovered last week.

The service, which will be in line with Chinese traditions, took place at 1900 BST on the foreshore at Bolton-le-Sands in Lancashire.

It was followed by a reception at the Dome in Morecambe.

The victims' families have spoken of their desire to have the bodies of their loved ones returned to them.

But the high cost of flying the bodies home once the criminal investigation is complete poses an obstacle to many.

The cocklers died early in February when they were trapped by fast incoming tides at night.

Councillors in Lancaster have been discussing ways to ensure the tragedy is not repeated.
