Hundreds lose jobs as dairy shuts
Milk
Arla Foods is cutting milk production
Nearly 300 jobs are to be lost with the closure of the Express Dairy depot at Bamber Bridge, near Preston.

Arla Foods UK - the company formed by the merger of Express Dairies and Arla UK - say the plant is efficient but the firm has to cut its milk production.

Arla, which makes Lurpak and Anchor butter, will shut the depot in July with the loss of 280 jobs.

Workers have been concerned some plants might be at risk ever since last year's merger.

The company said it would have to rationalise its production after the merger.

The news is bleak for the staff at Express with no offer of alternative employment elsewhere in the area although a job club will be set up to help people.

The dairy has operated in Bamber Bridge since 1942 with Express moving in 10 years ago.
