Fishermen join quota protest

Fleetwood is on of the biggest ports in the North West
Fishermen from Fleetwood have joined a blockade of Belgian ports in protest over proposed cuts to fishing quotas.

They say tougher quotas would kill off what remains of the Lancashire port's fishing industry.

Tom Watson was among fishermen from around the UK and the European Union who protested in Antwerp on Wednesday.

He says restricting the amount of fish they can catch is not the answer to protecting dwindling stocks.

"What will happen after this, if we don't get some better fisheries management in place, I don't know."

Back in Fleetwood, trawler fisherman Phil Dell wants to protect his livelihood.

"Fleetwood used to have hundreds of ships and thousands of men. The town was bustling.

"Over the last 30 odd years, I've just watched it go down, down, down. It's terrible."

But he says the amount of fish they are hauling is "tremendous."

Many of the fishermen worry what they will do if they are told to catch even fewer fish.

"There's nothing for a fisherman. There's no redundancy pay, there's nothing. You're thrown on the quay and then you're gone," Mr Dell added.
