The Conservatives were celebrating on Friday after an evening of success across Lancashire.

They won five seats and overall control in Fylde, which had previously been hung, as well as winning back Hyndburn from Labour which had captured it in 2002.

The Tories also claimed Ribble Valley from no overall control and became the largest party in South Ribble.

Meanwhile Labour lost six seats and overall control of Rossendale.

The vote followed controversy over council plans to close down several amenities.

On a night of controversy in Burnley, where the British National Party won seven new seats, there were precious few shocks.

Two party leaders, for Labour in Pendle and the Morecambe Bay Independents in Lancaster, also lost their seats.

There was no change in Blackpool, Preston, West Lancashire, Wyre or Chorley.
