E-safety DVD to protect children

The e-safety DVD has been produced by children specifically for children

A DVD offering advice and guidance to help keep children safe while using social networking sites has been launched by officials in Kent.

Funded by Kent Police and Kent County Council, the e-safety DVD is the first in a series created by young people.

It will be distributed, along with supporting teaching material, to schools within Kent and Medway.

The DVD was launched at the fourth e-safety conference to be held at Kent Police College, run by the council.

Break down barriers

Students from Kent Safe Schools and Medway Youth Parliament, who sit on the Kent and Medway Young Peoples Safety Forum, created the idea of the DVD and worked with members of the county's e-safety group.

The forum includes representatives from Kent County Council, Kent Police, schools, Kent Youth County Council and Medway Youth Parliament.

Assistant Chief Constable Allyn Thomas said: "Offering advice and guidance to children on how to stay safe online is sometimes met with resistance and maybe seen as adults 'telling them what to do'.

"Be safe - e-safe has been produced by children for children with the hope it will break that barrier and help to deliver the messages on how to stay safe on the internet."
