Stretcher march helps war heroes

A group of service personnel are marching through Surrey as they near the end of a 300-mile stretcher-carry to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

The 30 marchers, from Headley Court rehabilitation centre in Surrey and Blandford Camp in Dorset, are hoping to raise �100,000 for the charity.

The troops are carrying the stretcher to symbolise the service personnel injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Organiser Sgt Paul Roberts said he hoped to see many supporters en route.

They were due to reach Guildford at 1330 BST and Leatherhead at 1730 BST.

The last part of the march, through London, is on Saturday where they will be welcomed at the Tower of London before a celebration dinner in the evening.

The march began in Plymouth Hoe on 18 August.

Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 to raise �6m for a new gym and swimming pool at Headley Court, near Epsom.

The original target was reached in eight months, and it is now aiming to improve other facilities for wounded service personnel and their families.
