Drug drop-off offered to clubbers

The mobile ION track machine can be carried between premises

Drug collection boxes are being installed at pubs and clubs in north Kent so users can leave banned substances outside the venues.

The scheme is designed to reduce disorder in the area's night-spots.

Officers are also using a mobile ION track machine, which can detect traces of drugs, as a condition of entry to venues in Dartford and Gravesend.

Kent Police said the drug bins and detector would disrupt the use and supply of drugs in north Kent.

Police officers working on the Safer Streets operation now have their own mobile ION track machine, which unlike their static version, can be easily carried between premises.

The first 11 of 29 drug disposal and collection boxes have been issued to the busiest venues.

A police spokesperson said the secure box is "a ground-breaking initiative" that allows people who have a small amount of drugs on them for personal use to dispose of them, no questions asked, before entering a pub or club.

The first was presented to Martin Harris, manager of the Bull and Vic pub in Dartford, by Chief Constable Michael Fuller.

Chief Constable Fuller said: "It has been great to see the excellent level of co-operation with the staff of these premises - it is a real success story which ensures those who come here to enjoy a night out, are able to do so in safety."
