Protest plan to shut power plant

Campaigners will protest about the proposed power station in August

Environmental campaigners planning a protest camp in Kent have said they are willing to break the law by forcing the Kingsnorth power station to shut down.

Demonstrators organising the Climate Camp event in August said they would bring it to a standstill over plans to build a new coal-fired plant there.

Spokeswoman Mel Jones said it would be shut down "because coal cannot be part of the UK's energy future".

Police said "direct and robust action" would be taken against offenders.

Public meetings

Ch Insp Des Keers said the force intended to police a lawful and peaceful protest, but it would not hesitate to bring offenders to justice.

Last year a group of Greenpeace activists broke into the power station, near Hoo, before abseiling down the stack.

The Camp for Climate Action is to be held at E.ON's Kingsnorth site in Kent, from 3 to 12 August.

On Tuesday, the first of two public meetings organised by Kent Police to inform locals about policing the event was held.

The second is due to be held at Grain Village Hall, Grain, on Thursday.
