A book of support for soldiers serving abroad is to be opened in the Kent home town of 36 Engineer Regiment.

The regiment is currently serving in Afghanistan and has lost two soldiers during its deployment.

Residents living in Maidstone will be able to write messages of support and condolence to the regiment, which includes the Gurkhas, at the town hall.

Councillor John Horne, who put forward the proposal, said the book would help boost the soldiers' morale.

The regiment of about 300 soldiers was given the Freedom of the Borough 42 years ago.

'Show empathy'

Mr Horne said he hoped the gesture would allow local residents to show their ongoing support.

"It gives the people of Maidstone the opportunity to do something, and to make their comment and show their empathy."

Two soldiers from 36 Engineer Regiment have died in Afghanistan this year.

In November, Lance Corporal Jake Alderton, 22, from Bexley, south-east London, was killed in a road accident.

Lance Corporal Ivano Violino, 29, from Salford, Greater Manchester, died in an explosion in September.
