Two lifeboat launches celebrated

The Atlantic 85 and the new D-class launched at Walmer
A Kent lifeboat station has enjoyed the rare privilege of taking delivery of two new vessels on one day.

Walmer RNLI station, which is marking its 150th anniversary, launched the Atlantic 85 rigid inflatable and a smaller new D-class on Wednesday.

Deputy Divisional Inspector Allen Head said it would help to save more lives.

"The Atlantic 85 has much better speed and much more equipment which will enable us to find casualties much quicker," he said.

Direction finder

Since the station opened in 1856, Walmer has carried out 651 launches and saved 236 lives.

The new Atlantic 85 can reach 35 knots and has radar and a satellite navigation system, including a VHF direction finder to enable crews to track radio frequencies.

"We also have an extra seat, which makes a fourth crewman available to effect services," said Mr Head.

The new D-class inflatable has a top speed of 25 knots, better handling and sat-nav.
