British forces in Iraq are being supported by the Royal Engineers |
Roads were closed in the Medway towns for celebrations marking 200 years of the Army being stationed in the area. The Royal Engineers took over Brompton barracks when Napoleon was in power and have fought in every conflict since.
Lt Col Andy Phillips said the Engineers were now in Iraq and Afghanistan supporting other British forces there.
"They are providing everything they need to live, to move, to fight," he said. "That's really what the engineers' role is."
Events in Medway on Saturday included a parade by the Royal Engineers Corps marching band and the Cadet Band pipes and drums.
Displays were also given by the Royal Signals motorcycle display team and the Royal Engineers parachute jump team.
People were also given a chance to look around the barracks accommodation "to get a complete feel of Army life," organisers said.
Temporary road closures were in place in Rochester and Chatham on Saturday.
