West Kent's rubbish will be dealt with at the Allington incinerator |
A Kent Labour MP has called for more clarity on a county council's waste disposal plans over a "very worrying" public consultation. A disused power station at Richborough is one of four places selected as possible sites for waste incinerators.
But MP for Thanet South Steve Ladyman said the options were not explained well enough in a consultation document.
Councillor Graham Gibbens said: "We have made it quite clear we are considering a range of options."
Mr Gibbens, cabinet member for regeneration at Kent County Council (KCC), said most of west Kent's waste would be dealt with by the incinerator at Allington.
'Vigorously opposed'
Now a method of disposing of east Kent's waste needs to be found.
"Plans to build an incinerator at Richborough were vigorously opposed by people from Sandwich and Ramsgate," said Mr Ladyman.
"KCC's latest consultation seems to be raising the issue once again and is very worrying.
"It is difficult to tell from the consultation exactly what is being proposed for Richborough.
"It talks about waste treatment capacity and I have got a horrible feeling it is a euphemism for incinerator."
Mr Gibbens said there was a range of options for east Kent, including waste-to-energy and separating different types of waste.
"At this stage this is what we are consulting on.
"We are not specifying any particular option - if we did that people would say we have preset views and the consultation is a waste of time.
"We are looking at hard decisions and we will not be able to please everyone."
