 War veterans marched through Canterbury city centre |
Large crowds cheered World War II veterans who paraded through Canterbury city centre to commemorate the 60th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day. The veterans were led by a military band and flanked by cadets in what was said to be one of the biggest parades in the South East, outside of London.
The Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Allan Willett, read the lesson during a service later in Canterbury Cathedral.
The cathedral bells rang out across the city as the thanksgiving service ended.
'Marvellous veterans'
It was being followed by a victory party for the veterans and their families, hosted by the Territorial Army.
Along with those of the city's other churches, the cathedral's bells will ring out again at 1700 BST on Sunday.
On Thursday, the day of the London bombings, 350 veterans paraded through Maidstone town centre.
Mr Willett said then: "There is no way that we and the marvellous veterans are going to be cowed by the actions of those who commit such atrocities."
