MP discusses future of barracks
Gwyn Prosser MP
Mr Prosser is working with Dover council on the future of the barracks
Further education facilities could be built at a barracks in Kent after an army regiment leaves the site in March, it has been suggested.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is moving the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment from the Connaught Barracks in Dover to a new home in Wales.

There are no plans to replace them and the land will be put up for sale.

Dover MP Gwyn Prosser said new housing was an option, but he would support the site being used for education purposes.

Mr Prosser said he had established a "good basis for a working relationship in the future" after meeting a defence minister at the MoD on Tuesday.

Planning talks

"We wanted to say that we were disappointed and saddened to be losing the barracks, but now was the time to draw a line and look forward to future use.

"The district council wants to keep a grip on any development.

"It's important that we talk to the planners and developers so we get a plan that is right for Dover."

Mr Prosser said the barracks already resembled a campus, with accommodation blocks, common rooms and health facilities.

"We're wondering if it is a good idea to start demolishing structures which are already in place," he said.

The MP said he believed lecture halls and other teaching facilities would need to be added if further education became a viable use for the site.
