The BBC's Head of News, Helen Boaden, was one of the judges |
A Kent man has been crowned the UK's best student news broadcaster. James Laidler, 20, from Gillingham, impressed the judges - who included the BBC's director of news, Helen Boaden - with his investigative journalism.
Mr Laidler began as a volunteer at the Medway Maritime Hospital's radio station before moving on to student radio while at Southampton University.
His prize includes a work placement at BBC Radio Five Live, a digital radio and a glass trophy.
'No Paxman'
Mr Laidler's attempts to engage young people in politics was also praised by the judging panel.
But he insisted he is no Jeremy Paxman, saying: " I don't think so - Jeremy is more scary than next door's rottweiler."
When he graduates in July, Mr Laidler plans to pursue a masters degree in journalism.
The Student Radio Awards has been running since 1996 and has become a showcase for radio industry talent spotters looking for future presenters and producers.
