MEP backs anti-airport campaign

Applications are planned for the runway and the terminal building
A Kent MEP will be handing out earplugs to residents in Folkestone in a protest at plans to expand Lydd Airport.

Green MEP Caroline Lucas aims to show how much noise will be created by proposals to enlarge the Romney Marsh airport so it can accept jet aircraft.

Managers hope to be able carry up to two million passengers a year by 2011.

But protesters have said it will harm the environment, quality of life for local residents and the area's tourism trade, all of which the airport denies.

'High profile figure'

Ms Lucas will be at Folkestone's precinct on Friday morning, to encourage more local people to sign a petition against the expansion plans.

Chairman of the coalition Malcolm Dyer said: "We are delighted that such a high profile figure is coming to help us this way."

In a separate exercise earlier this month, campaigners took recordings of jet noise to villages near Lydd airport to show how loud passenger planes can be.

But the airport said trial flights have been carried out and only a handful of comments have been received from the public.
