Concern over house building plans
Plans to build thousands of new homes in the Medway area cannot go ahead unless many are on greenfield land, the local council has warned.

The area is due to have about 10,000 homes built as part of John Prescott's plans to build more than a million new homes in the South East by 2016.

The leader of Medway Council says there is not enough room on brownfield sites.

The government has recommended houses should be built on brownfield land where possible.

'No brownfield left'

Councillor Rodney Chamber, Medway Council leader said: "We cannot take housing at this level.

"With the present proposals we've got in our joint Kent and Medway structure plan, we can accommodate the planned housing in that.

"But after 2016 we would have no brownfield sites left and we would have to go onto greenfield.

"We would have to use greenfield sites such as the Hoo Peninsula, Capston Valley or Gillingham Waterfront - that is all we would have left."

Cllr Chambers said he would like to see Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Surrey being considered for more new houses as alternatives.

A meeting to discuss the possible problems is to be held in Hoo on Monday evening.
