A six-week campaign aimed at stopping an increase in crime as the autumn nights draw in has begun in Kent.

Police are putting on extra patrols in the Stanhope area, which includes the crime-hit Stanhope Estate, in Ashford.

Operation Pagan will cover the key dates for violence, criminal damage and anti-social behaviour of Halloween, Guy Fawkes and the October half-term.

Officers said crime traditionally increased with the darker nights, often with youths setting off fireworks.

Possessing drugs

The crackdown got under way on Friday with a raid on a flat believed to be connected to Class A drug use.

The premises were searched and a man was later charged with possessing drugs for personal use.

Kent Police say the darker nights traditionally lead to an increase in crime, often involving youths setting off fireworks in the streets.

During Operation Pagan, everything from low-level anti-social behaviour to drug dealing will be targeted.

Tactics will include high-visibility patrols, road checks and the increased use of anti-social behaviour orders.

"We are put here by the community to police the community and the community wants to see that we are out and about on foot," said Acting Sgt Chris Kidd.

The Stanhope Estate is currently undergoing a 200m facelift.

Two blocks of flats have already been demolished and seven more are due to go.
