Pub bans drinking for under-21s
Ross Bower
Landlord Ross Bower wants to help police stop binge drinking
A Kent pub is banning the sale of alcohol to under 21s in an effort to tackle under-age and binge drinking.

Ross Bower, landlord of The Leading Light in Faversham, said the aim was to try to help police in their efforts to reclaim the streets from yob culture.

"On a weekend night we get quite a young crowd coming in and you are permanently running around trying to turf them out," he said.

Ch Insp Ian Hall said: "Police will support any initiative of that nature."

High-profile patrols

Canterbury and Dover, in Kent, are among 60 anti-social action areas which have been given extra money by the government.

Kent Police are mounting high-profile patrols at weekends and monitoring the situation in pubs and bars very closely.

However, they welcome any extra help from landlords.

"Police would support any initiative that assists in reducing the levels of under-age drinking, binge drinking and any alcohol-fuelled disorder," said Mr Hall.

One 18-year-old customer of the Preston Street pub said a lot of people her age used The Leading Light and she thought it would lose a lot of trade.

But an elderly male drinker said: "It's a good idea. Under 21s are a menace."
